Killing of soldiers in Ashaiman is senseless, animalistic but the military response is not democratic – CDS Africa

The African Center for Democracy and Socio-economic Development (CDS) said the killing of young soldiers in Ashaiman was cruel, inhumane and animalistic.

However, CDS said, the response of some military personnel in the form of attacks on Tafia residents and the entire Ashaiman community is undemocratic.

The use of force against innocent civilians is a violation of human rights and must be condemned, he said.

He suggested that the leadership of the Ghana Armed Forces should call their soldiers to order and ensure that those responsible for attacks on civilians are brought to book as soon as possible.

“It is important to recognize the importance of upholding the rule of law and due process, especially in a democratic country like Ghana. Violence is not a substitute for anything, in a democracy.

“The violence inflicted on the people of Ashaiman has far-reaching consequences for our democracy and peace. For example, it can damage relations with security agencies, greatly delay and make the work of the Police investigation more difficult because citizens can withdraw or refuse to cooperate with investigators to identify and arrest the criminals who killed Imoro Sheriff in cold blood. We therefore call on all to exercise restraint and abide by the law. The rule of law is the way of democracy, and the Military must abide by the law. The Ministry of Defense must ensure that the Ghanaian armed forces reflect Ghana’s democratic values ,” said Edna Asante (Ms), Assistant Program Officer at CDS-Africa.

On Tuesday, March 7, Ashaiman Member of Parliament, Ernest Norgbey reported that military officers raided the homes of some civilians in Ashaiman on Monday, March 6 and brutalized them after soldiers were killed in the area.

Mr. Norgbey said on the Sunrise show on 3FM with Johnnie Hughes that “He can be peved because one of his own has disappeared but brutalizing people is not the solution to this problem.”
