Kenyan police have buried the bodies of 21 people believed to be followers of a Christian cult that believed they would go to heaven if they starved to death.
Police near the coastal town of Malindi began exhuming the bodies on Friday and found seven bodies that day. They recovered another 14 bodies on Saturday, detective Charles Kamau told Reuters on Sunday.
“This terrible act must lead to not only the most severe punishment for the perpetrators of atrocities against many innocent souls, but stricter laws (including self-regulation) of every church, mosque, temple or synagogue. go forward,” said the Minister Interior Kithure Kindiki.
He added that the entire 800-hectare forest where the grave was found has been closed and declared a crime scene.
Earlier this month, police rescued 15 members of the group – worshipers at the Good News International Church – who were said to be starving to death. The four died before reaching the hospital, police said.
The church’s leader, Paul Mackenzie, was arrested after a tip-off suggested the existence of a shallow grave belonging to at least 31 of Mackenzie’s followers.
Local media, citing police sources, reported that Mackenzie refused to eat or drink while in police custody.
