Former Scotland and British and Irish Lions full-back Ken Scotland has died aged 86, the Scottish Rugby Union has confirmed.

The Scot, who also represented his country in cricket, made his international rugby union debut in the 1957 Five Nations Championship against France.

He made 27 appearances over the next eight years, and also played for Leicester Tigers, who named him in the ‘Team of the Century’ in 1999.

Scottish Rugby said it was “very sad” by the death of Scotland, describing it as “a player ahead of his time, a true trailblazer.”

Scotland great Andy Irvine added: “Ken is definitely one of the best players to ever be a rugby player and one of the nicest people you could ever meet.

“As a schoolboy at George Heriot’s he was my main hero and when I played senior rugby in the FP team I was delighted to receive personal coaching from Ken.

“He has a great rugby brain and a great way of explaining his thoughts and ideas to help the players. Not only is he a great player but also a great coach.”

Scotland were among the first to be inducted into the Scottish Rugby Hall of Fame.
