Kelly Clarkson Announces Post-Divorce Album ‘Chemistry’

He’s back! Kelly Clarkson announced the album they have been working on since their split in 2020 Brandon Blackstock it will eventually release.

“It’s official time to tell you that I’ve been working on this project for almost three years now. I’m not sure I’m going to release it, but I really am,” said the singer, 40, in a video via Twitter and Instagram, Sunday, March 26.

At The Kelly Clarkson Show host, whose last completely original album dropped in 2017, told that his new LP is called Chemical.

“It’s called Chemical because I’m trying to find a word – well, maybe one of the songs on the album – that describes everything,” Clarkson explained. “I don’t want everyone to think that I just came out with some ‘I’m angry,’ ‘I’m sad’ – just one or two emotions. This album is definitely the arc of the whole relationship. The whole relationship shouldn’t come down to just one. So there’s good, bad, and ugly in there.”

The Texas native added that he also appreciates the double-edged sword nature of the strong spark in the relationship. “Chemistry can be an amazing, sexy, cool, fun thing, but it can also be very bad for you. That’s why I named it Chemical. I thought this was the perfect title to describe the whole album.

He didn’t announce a release date, but Clarkson promised that new music is coming soon. “When I say soon, I mean very soon,” he added.

The singer concluded: “I’m very happy. I’m nervous, but I’m excited to put it down.”

Clarkson and Blackstock, 46, called it quits in June 2020 after nearly seven years of marriage. The “Since U Been Gone” singer filed for divorce at the time, citing “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for the split.

At Voice Coach and estranged husband – who shares daughter River Rose, 8, and son Remington, 6 – have a messy split in the middle of the legal process, which includes a long battle over Montana property. Clarkson was officially announced as single in September 2021, and the divorce was finalized six months later.

The daytime TV personality announced in September 2022 that she had recorded many of her next albums while she was newly single, but would not release them until she had processed her emotions.

“When my ex and I broke up, there were a lot of emotions. It was hard. My producer and I were laughing yesterday because I was like, ‘Remember when we wrote, like, 25 songs in a week?’ A lot of that is on the album,” Clarkson said variety in time. “I almost wrote it almost two years ago. Then I told my label, ‘I can’t talk about it until I’m done,’ and it just took a while to do it. That’s one of the reasons we did so many Christmas shows in the last two years – because I was like, ‘Yeah, it’s fun!’

He added that his new album is an emotional album – so personal that he considered not releasing it. “I’ve never worked so hard on an album until I needed it. … But then all the divorces happened, and I had to write,” Clarkson said at the time. So some songs, of course, cover the emotional gamut; it’s all on the album. It’s almost like a relationship arc, because it starts off really nice and sweet, and then it develops. And sometimes it doesn’t develop as expected.

Clarkson’s Chemical doesn’t have a release date yet.
