Karl Jenkins, the 79-year-old Welsh composer, confirmed in a telephone interview on Thursday that he not Meghan Markle.

“No, I certainly don’t,” Mr Jenkins said, adding that he was “79 years old.”

Why would anyone confuse the composer with the Duchess of Sussex? The allegations began after the coronation of King Charles III at Westminster Abbey on Saturday. Ms Markle did not go, but Mr Jenkins, the classical composer who was knighted in 2015, attending because one of his harp compositions was being performed.

Mr Jenkins, who has his famous shaggy white hair and bushy moustache, said he wore regular prescription aviator glasses with tinted lenses at the ceremony.

But for some people, the unkempt hair and oversized glasses are a disguise. On social mediajokesters say Mr. Jenkins is Ms. Markle, which Buckingham Palace has said will not travel to London with Prince Harry for the ceremony, but instead stay in the United States with their children.

On Tuesday, after several tweets speculating that Mr. Jenkins as the duchess incognito had received hundreds of thousands of views, he posted a video to TikTok in which he said he was not Ms. Markle in disguise.

“This is just what Meghan Markle said in disguise,” said the most liked comment on the video.

In an interview from London, Mr. Jenkins, who said he had met with Ms. Markle twice, speaking to The New York Times about her unexpected brush with internet fame.

The interview below has been lightly edited and condensed.

How do you know when people think you’re Ms. Markle?

My music publisher told me the next day about this type of thing on social media. I can’t believe it, really. In my neighborhood, three different groups pointed at me and said, “You’re in a Monastery!” I was bought a drink.

How do you prepare for a coronation display?

My hair, glasses and mustache are vibrant. I have looked the same since I was 18, so there is nothing creepy or fabricated. My glasses are not prescription glasses, they are slightly tinted because I had cataract surgery last year.

How do you feel when people are fans of your appearance?

I don’t know if this is a compliment or not. It was absolutely ridiculous, as the security required to enter the Abbey during the coronation was so extensive. You must show your passport, driving license and utility bill with an address that matches your name. No one under any guise can get past that security.

Which response was funniest to you?

Something about me stealing the crown jewels. That seems a bit absurd. There was one who called me the coolest guy in the Abbey, which is pretty good going for someone my age.
