Failed Arizona GOP gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake on Friday risked the wrath of the estate of the late rocker Tom Petty. again.
A tweet from the former TV news anchor’s campaign account quoted four lines from Petty’s 1989 song “I Won’t Back Down.”
It comes as the Arizona Supreme Court declined to hear Lake’s challenge of her 2022 loss — by about 17,000 votes — to Democrat Katie Hobbs. Lake still refused to concede the race.
The campaign account’s upload drew criticism from commentators, who accused Trump-endorsed Lake of disparaging the song.
Petty’s estate slammed Lake in November and said it was “exploring all legal options” after he used the same song in a video.
“Tom Petty’s estate and our partners are shocked to learn that Tom’s song ‘I Won’t Back Down’ was stolen and used without permission or license to promote Kari Lake’s failed campaign,” tweeted the estate of Petty, who died last year. 2017 from an accidental drug overdose.
“This is illegal,” he added at the time. “We are exploring all legal options to stop this unauthorized use and to prohibit deviating from Tom’s beloved song. Thank you to all of his fans for bringing this to our attention and helping us protect his legacy every day.
The estate has yet to comment on the latest post.
