Kane broke the record as 10-man England beat Italy
Harry Kane became England’s record goalscorer as they opened their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign with their first win in Italy since 1961.
Kane write his name in the history book in the 44th minute when he beat Gianluigi Donnarumma from the penalty spot for his 54th goal, overtaking previous record holder Wayne Rooney.
Declan Rice gave England an early lead when he scored from close range after Kane’s shot was blocked before the captain recalled missing a penalty against France in the World Cup quarter-finals in Qatar except with an emphatic spot-kick.
Italy, who were halted at half-time in their first international in Naples for a decade, improved as England were sloppy and debutant Mateo Retegui was the beneficiary of poor work from Harry Maguire to drill an innocent finish past Jordan Pickford after 56 minutes.
England’s dip in performance was compounded by Luke Shaw’s second yellow card with 10 minutes remaining, but they held on to win.
