Colbert asked Harris if he made DeSantis’ stance that it is not in America’s interest to give aid to Ukraine “against an invading force.”
“If you have the experience of meeting and understanding the importance, again, of international rules and norms, and the importance of the United States standing firmly and clearly on the importance of sovereignty and territorial integrity, the importance of standing firmly against any nation that will try to take over another country by forced,” Harris told Colbert.
“If you really understood the issue, you probably wouldn’t make such a statement.”
DeSantis’ refusal to support Ukraine prompted backlash from prominent Republicans, including Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), Sen. Lindsey Graham (RS.C.) and Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas).
Cornyn, who called the war a “very important” issue, said he was “surprised” by DeSantis’ statement.
“I mean, Governor DeSantis is a veteran,” Cornyn told CNN. “He is a smart man. I think he’s a very good governor and I don’t understand him saying that Ukraine is not important to the United States.
