MANILA, Philippines—Kai Sotto has become a starter for the Adelaide 36ers in the 2022-23 Australian National Basketball League season.
In seven consecutive starts, Sotto has contributed significantly to the 36ers, averaging 9.2 points and 5.7 rebounds.
The 7-foot-3 Filipino center emphasized his willingness to take on any role to benefit from Adelaide’s success.
“I always stay ready for all the opportunities that the coach gives me,” Sotto said on the team’s website.
“Every practice and every game I play, I show my teammates that they can count on me. So, I’m always ready.”
Sotto matched a season-high 16 points on top of five rebounds and two blocks in Adelaide’s 85-83 loss to the New Zealand Breakers on Sunday at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre.
The 20-year-old Gilas Pilipinas mainstay said making full use of his size, especially on the defensive end has been key to his consistent play.
“It’s a major role in this team with my size, the first thing I think about when I step on the field is to make an impact defensively and everything will be done,” said Sotto.
The move to insert Sotto in the starting lineup has led to Adelaide winning five of the last seven games for an 11-10 slate.
The 36ers picked up a comeback win against the visiting Tasmanian JackJumpers (11-10) on Thursday.
