JUST IN: Former speaker of Parliament Dr Frene Ginwala dies



South Africa’s first democratic speaker of parliament, Dr Frene Ginwala, has died at the age of 90.

Ginwala died on Thursday night after suffering a stroke two weeks ago, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced his death in a statement some time ago.

Ramaphosa has expressed his condolences to Ginwala’s friends, colleagues and friends in South Africa and beyond.

“On behalf of the nation and the legislative, executive and judicial components of the country, the president offers his sincere condolences to the family of Dr Ginwala, his nephews Cyrus, Sohrab and Zavareh, and their families,” he said. The presidency said.
