Josh Taylor has confirmed he has suffered a “pretty bad injury” as he prepares for his Jack Catterall rematch and the Scottish world champion insists “we’ll fight when I’m ready to fight”.
Taylor is expected to confirm a second fight with Catterall, but this decline in fitness means he will have to wait a little longer to return to the ring after a controversial points win over the Chorley boxer last February.
Fierce rivals must be separated on Saturday night as they rage at ringside as they attend the Chris Eubank Jr vs Liam Smith bill at The AO Arena in Manchester.

“The injury happened during the week on Monday, but I have tried to overcome it and see if I can continue training, but I can’t.
“I went to the specialist, and it’s a pretty bad injury, so I can’t rush it. I’ll just have to wait and see how long it takes to recover.

“It’s a huge frustration. I fired up for this fight, ready to go. I flew in the gym and everything is going well.
“Everything was on point and then I had a bad accident, and it was just one of those things that was out of my control.
“I can just try and recover as quickly as possible, get back into the gym and get back into my training routine as quickly as possible.
“I hope it’s soon. I can’t make a timeline right now. I’ll have to wait and see how the recovery goes and what the doctors and specialists say.
“It’s not going to be rushed because it’s bad enough. So we’ll have to wait and see, but hopefully as soon as possible, because I really want to fight and continue my career.
“My career has been on hold for a few years, so I want to get back on track.”

To make the rematch possible, Taylor had to surrender three of the four world titles he held, not allowing mandatory challengers to divert him from the fight he wanted.
He remains the WBO 140lb champion, so even if a rematch doesn’t allow Catterall to challenge for his undisputed status again, it will still be a second consecutive world title for him. Mainly though it will give Catterall a chance to try to settle the score with Taylor.
Injuries to the Scotsman will impose a longer wait for the battle of the two men crave.
