There are pieces from last year Vanity Fair that I always think when I consider just what is cool, in the classic sense of the word. This writer writes about Brad Pitt and George Clooney at the height of cool around all time Ocean’s Eleven movies and how, if they chat up girlfriends at the party, you will applaud yourself.
It’s a perfect analogy just what is cool.
When I read or listen to anything about the days of Hugh Masekela and Jonas Gwangwa and their experiences abroad, all I think is “man, these guys are so cool”. He lived in the black and white era – which when it was bad – could rise to the top with a swagger that no musician today can survive. part was this week on Mail & Guardians a sign of life that, strangely enough, ended this January together with another great jazz that exudes this mystical cool, Sibongile Khumalo.
It is definitely a cool edition this year as the editor of the section, Lerato Tshabalala, also celebrates Sade’s music. The band and their lead, named after them, are definitely no ordinary group.
I hope you enjoyed Friday’s coverage as much as I did, as well as covering the story of the year so far, Eskom. We try as much as possible to contextualize why we are here and who brought us to this point.
