President Joe Biden is ripping off a major push by Republican Florida Governor Ron Desantis to silence his state’s schools by censoring Black history books and classes and even eliminating high school classes.
Biden tweeted Friday in response to DeSantis’ relentless attack on Florida education: “I think every child, in every zip code, in every state should have access to all educational opportunities.”
He added, “I think, for some, it’s not a consensus view.”
Biden was responding to a story in The Washington Post Thursday about Florida parents who are angry over concerns about education in the state because of DeSantis’ efforts to fight what he sees as “awakening” to give way to a right-wing perspective that includes war. in a course about Black history.
Parents and students fear that the consequences of the governor’s agenda will reduce the chances of Florida students getting into the nation’s top colleges. As a result, some parents are discussing moving out of state to protect their children’s education, The Washington Post reported.
Earlier this week, DeSantis threatened to block all Advanced Placement (AP) classes in the state. Taking demanding top-level courses is essential for students seeking admission to top universities where competition for places is fierce. High AP test scores can also earn you college credit.
DeSantis made the AP threat in a snit after being blasted by the College Board, the non-profit organization responsible for Advanced Placement courses, and other education experts for “defamation” denigrating – and blocking – the new Advanced Placement African Studies study in Florida. public school.
“Parents across the country need to pay attention to this threat” to the AP class, Katie Hathaway, a Jacksonville parent whose son will enter high school next year, told the Post. “I want him and every student in the country to have access to this valuable course with the opportunity for college credit.”
