First lady Jill Biden has rejected the Republican presidential candidate’s proposal to have elderly politicians take a mental competency test, calling the idea “ridiculous”.
2024 GOP candidate Nikki Haley, former US ambassador to the UN and governor of South Carolina, says politicians over the age of 75 should take a mandatory mental competency test. The idea is a dig at her former boss, Donald Trump, 76, who is also seeking the 2024 nomination, and President Joe Biden, 80, who has yet to announce a re-election campaign.
Jill Biden said her family would not go along with Haley’s idea.
“We support whatever they want,” she told CNN’s Arlette Saenz. “If they come in, we’re there. If they want to do something else, we’re there, too.”
The first lady rebuffed those who said her husband was too old for a second term by pointing to a surprise trip to Kyiv to mark the anniversary of Russia’s war on Ukraine.
“How many 30-year-olds can travel to Poland, take a train, go another nine hours, go to Ukraine, meet the President. [Volodymyr] Zelensky?” he asked. “So, look at him. Look at what they do. See what they continue to do every day.
