Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes said in the ‘Opening Night’ of the Super Bowl week that he wants to “roll over” his right ankle injury in Sunday’s big game against the Philadelphia Eagles; “I’m going to push. I’m going to try to leave everything in line”

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts said he hopes that the first ever matchup between two Black QBs in the Super Bowl will help inspire the next generation.

Hurts will face Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVII on Sunday – live on Sky Sports NFL and Main Event from 10pm (Kick-off, 11.30pm) – and the couple, as well as each member of both teams, face the media for the first time in the ‘Opening Night’ to kick-start the Super Bowl week in Arizona.

Hurts, asked about the significance of his and Mahomes’ historic meeting, said: “First time for both [Black QBs] to go head-to-head, that is uplifting the next generation of quarterbacks.

“A four-year-old, a five-year-old, back in Houston, back in Philly, back in Texas, Louisiana, anywhere in the world, it shows that no matter what other people say or say about you, you can do it.

“I appreciate the platform I have, I’m sure Pat does, too. We just want to inspire the next person.”

Mahomes to ‘leave it all on the line’

As for Mahomes, the main question he faced from the media on Friday night revolved around the high ankle sprain he suffered in the Chiefs’ divisional playoff victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars and then his problem in the AFC Championship win over the Cincinnati Bengals.

Mahomes performed well in both games, despite his injuries, and he assured his status for Sunday’s big game by saying he wants to “leave it all on the line” against the Eagles.

“You never know until you’re out in the game,” Mahomes said. “But I’m going to push it.

“I’ll try to leave everything on the line. I think you all saw that in the last game I played.

“It’s about relying on your teammates … I’m not trying to do too much. But I’m definitely in a better place. [than] when I was out there last week [in the AFC Championship].”

This isn’t the first time that Mahomes has been hampered by an injury heading into the Super Bowl, with the superstar QB being hampered by a turf toe in the loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to close out the 2020 season.

Sunday’s game will be their third Super Bowl appearance in four years, after their first win in 2019, rallying the team from a 20-10 deficit in the fourth quarter to defeat the San Francisco 49ers.

“The win was awesome,” Mahomes said. “It’s one of the best moments of your whole life. You take all the positives out of it.

“But the loss, that stings. That’s what motivates you for the year. What it ends for me is what motivates me to come back in this game again. I want to make sure that I can have that feeling of winning and not that of losing because losing the feeling is one of the will never forget.

“You learn that you can’t take things for granted. You can’t come to a game and not have all the boxes checked. I thought we did, but obviously we didn’t and we lost the game and you have to use that as motivation to come back here.”

Mahomes added: “I think the biggest motivating factor is stepping on that field and trying to be the best. We know we have a big challenge with the Philadelphia Eagles, so it’s going to be a good game.”

Meanwhile, Hurts is confident about the Eagles’ mindset heading into Sunday’s Super Bowl, their first in his third year in the NFL.

“I didn’t put in all that work for no reason,” he said. “I put all this work, we put all this work, to have an opportunity like this. It will be fun.

“We just want to go out and do what we’ve been doing all this time, to try to play clean football and play together.

“We came here to finish a job.”

Asked if he had any plans for his pre-game speech on Sunday, Hurts added: “It all comes from the heart.

“I’m preparing. I’m trying to think of something that will make a man, but I don’t need to say much.

“We’ve put everything into practice … we want to go out and play our best game when we need to.”
