Ja Morant said Tuesday that he is learning to be a more responsible and smarter version of himself as he returns to practice with his Memphis Grizzlies teammates for the first time since his suspension.
The Grizzlies superstar hasn’t played since posting a video of himself at a Colorado strip club armed with a firearm on March 4.
The 23-year-old later served an eight-game suspension for conduct detrimental to the NBA but is now free to play again, possibly as early as Wednesday.
Morant told reporters that he is still undergoing therapy to help deal with stress, describing the treatment he received in Florida as “an ongoing process.”
“Obviously, I’ve been there for two weeks, but that doesn’t mean I’m any better,” Morant said.
“So it’s been an ongoing process for me that I’ve been working on since I got out.”
While the NBA said Morant was “drunk” in a video posted online, the Grizzlies star said he doesn’t have an alcohol problem.
“Never had an alcohol problem,” Morant said. “I went to counseling to learn how to manage stress, to deal with stress in a positive way instead of the way I tried to deal with it before which caused me to make mistakes.”
Morant added that he regrets that the upset overshadowed Memphis’ season last month.
“I have made mistakes in the past that have caused negative attention – not only for me, but also for my family, the team, the organization. I apologize,” said Morant.
“My job now is more responsible, smarter, and doesn’t cause anything anymore.”
