Washington, DC’s cherry trees attract tourists every spring with their blooms. The cherry tree was a gift from Japan in 1912 as a sign of friendship and is still today almost as famous as sekar in his home country. After receiving the cherry tree, the US responded under President William Howard Taft by sending a blooming dogwood tree.
Cherry trees have become a staple of the DC skyline and a symbol of Japan-US relations. The day after the attack on Pearl Harbor, however, several limbs of the DC tree were damaged in retaliation. According to the National Park Service, in the 1980s, a flood in Japan destroyed many varieties of this cherry tree, but Japanese horticulturists were able to restore some of the lost trees using hundreds of cuttings from Washington, DC trees.
