An Israeli airstrike targeting an arms depot in Syria on Sunday killed two pro-Iran fighters and wounded three soldiers, a war monitor said.
“The Israeli attack targeted an arms depot belonging to pro-Iranian forces located between the provinces of Tartus and Hama,” said Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
“Two pro-Iranian fighters were killed and three Syrian soldiers were wounded,” he told AFP.
The Syrian state news agency SANA, citing a military source, reported that “around 7:15 am (0415 GMT), the enemy of Israel carried out an air strike, firing missiles from the direction of northern Lebanon targeting the villages of Tartus and Hama. .”
SANA did not specify the target, but said the attack “wounded three soldiers and caused some material losses”, adding that the Syrian air defense intercepted several missiles.
The Israeli military said it did not comment “on reports in foreign media”.
Since Syria’s civil war erupted in 2011, Israel has carried out hundreds of strikes against its northern neighbor, targeting government forces as well as allied forces backed by Iran and Lebanese Hezbollah fighters.
Israel’s military rarely comments on individual strikes against Syria, but has repeatedly vowed to maintain an air campaign to stop Iranian adversary attacks.
On Tuesday, Israeli warplanes killed three people in an attack on an airport in Aleppo, Syria’s second city, the Observatory said.
On February 19, an Israeli airstrike killed 15 people in a Damascus district that is home to state security, according to war monitors.
