Israeli PM fires his defence minister for urging a halt to divisive judicial overhaul plan

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday fired Defense Minister Yoav Gallant after he said the government should delay moving forward with a hard-fought plan to overhaul the country’s justice system.

“Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has decided to remove from his post Defense Minister Yoav Gallant,” the prime minister’s office said.

Gallant, a lawmaker from Netanyahu’s right-wing Likud party, broke off Saturday by publicly calling on Netanyahu to delay the legislation.

He said nationwide protests against the overhaul of the judiciary, which included many military reserves, were also affecting regular forces and undermining national security.
