ISD Launches Platform To Combat Misinformation | General News

The Information Services Department (ISD) of the Ministry of Information has launched a new platform aimed at combating the growing misinformation in the country.

The platform is a website called Ghana Today which is a trusted news portal that provides accurate information on Government projects, programmes, communications and positions.

The launch of the platform took place on Monday, March 13, 2023, at the Ministry premises, and was attended by several government officials, stakeholders, and members of the media.

Speaking at the event, the Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, said that fighting wrong information is a critical task in today’s information age that requires a multifaceted approach. He said one such approach is to develop tools that will help monitor and track the spread of misinformation on social media platforms and other online channels.

“As you know, a significant part of the population now depends on online platforms and other social media platforms for information. It is also important to note that some unscrupulous people have used many of these portals and social media platforms to spread false and incorrect information. Phenomenon this is gradually destroying our democracy.

“Starting this website will help the Department in the fight against misinformation by providing direct information from Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) about the work of the Government and be a repository of all events in the government. It will provide facts about projects and programs of the Government, the full text of all speeches by the head of MDA, communication and official publications, policies, and program documents to reduce the level of misrepresentation and sometimes wrong information online,” he said.

He said the launch of the platform is an integral part of the Department’s re-organization and retooling program that aims to equip more audiences with its work even as times and media consumption patterns change.

On his part, the Chief Information Officer of ISD, Mr. David Owusu-Amoah urged Ghanaians to use the Ghana Today platform and be vigilant in consuming online content. He said it is important that we all take responsibility for the information we use and share and be mindful of the impact of false information on society as we work together to fight it.

“We all have a role to play in fighting misinformation. We all need to be responsible and verify information before sharing it. With this new tool, we hope to empower Ghanaians to take an active role in the fight against fake news,” he added.
