According to reports from Iowa Department of Inspections and AppealsIowa 66-year-old woman was admitted to Glen Oaks Alzheimer’s Specialty Care Center in Urbandale returns in December 2021 for early onset dementia. A year later on December 28, 2022, he was hospitalized as his condition worsened. According to the same report, just six days after that, on January 3, the woman was suspected of death by the staff at the treatment center, after the pulse was not found, and she did not seem to be breathing:
“He thought the resident had died and told the nurse.”
The nurse explained to the inspection agency that she had checked on the elderly woman, “every hour of the night,” to administer lorazepam and morphine to comfort her. He explained that he thought there were no signs of life after examining the woman’s abdomen and found no movement, could not find a pulse with a stethoscope, and heard no breathing sounds.

Soon after, the funeral home was called to pick up the woman. A director for the funeral home said they also did not find any signs of life, before zipping her closed into a body bag for transport. He then set off on the 40 minute drive back to the funeral home, where he made the most horrifying discovery imaginable:
“At approximately 8:26 a.m., hospice staff opened the bag and saw that Resident #1’s chest was moving and he was breathing.”
Funeral home employees immediately called 911 and the hospice care facility, and according to the report, when EMS arrived, they found a pulse and shallow breathing. From there, he was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment, and then transported back to the treatment facility, where he died surrounded by family two days later on January 5.

According to a citation from the Department of Inspections and Appeals, the care facility, which, “failed to ensure residents receive dignified care and treatment at the end of life,” was fined $10,000. In the statement to people Thursday, the facility’s executive director, Lisa Eastmanbroke his silence after the shocking incident, claiming that he had been in direct communication with the woman’s family:
“We have just completed an investigation by the Department of Inspection and Appeals on the matter. We care deeply for our residents and remain committed to supporting end-of-life care. All employees undergo regular training in order to support the end-of-life care and death of our residents.
What a really WILD situation… Do you think a $10,000 fine is a reasonable citation? This all sounds very unique as many people have come to the conclusion that he is not showing any signs of life… Take care of his family during this confusing and difficult time. Rest in peace.
