INEC speaks on purported release of final list of candidates

At Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is far from the final list of candidates for the 2023 general election released on Sunday.

The commission in a statement by the National Commissioner and Chairman, Committee on Information and Electoral Education, Festus Okoye, in Abuja on Monday, said INEC did not release any list on Sunday.

“The attention of the commission was drawn to the report distributed by the media section today, Monday, January 9, that the final list of candidates was released on our website on Sunday, January 8.

“The commission wants to state categorically that no new publication of the final list of candidates has been released as reported. That is why the public should reduce the story.”

Mr. Okoye said that for the record, the final list of candidates for the 2023 general election is published, at least, 150 days before the election day in accordance with the provisions of Sec. 32(1) Election Law 2022.

“Thus, the final list for the presidential and national assembly elections was published on September 20, 2022, while the governorship and state council elections were published two weeks later on October 4, 2022.

“This is clearly indicated as item eight in the Schedule and Schedule of Activities for the 2023 General Election released by the commission on February 26, 2022.”

Mr. Okoye said there is no final list of candidates with only 46 days to the general election, except for the names published as substitutions for the previously nominated candidates in line with the Court Order.
