Furthermore, the trade minister encouraged the public to be patient while wrapping things up before launching a crypto exchange. In his words, rushing without preparation can destroy the plan. In addition, the government wants to avoid anything that will harm the public because the public does not have enough crypto trading knowledge.

Crypto Surveillance To Change Hands As Indonesia Launches Nat’l Crypto Exchange

Currently, the Indonesian Commodity Futures Trading Regulatory Agency, also known as Bappebti, oversees and controls crypto assets in the country. But previous report stated that the agency will relinquish its authority over digital assets to the Financial Services Authority after the launch of the national exchange.

This decision is a response to the new crypto regulations, which were amended by the state parliamentarians on December 15, 2022. The newly ratified crypto regulations define cryptocurrency and other digital assets as Regulated Financial Securities. This means that the regulation of crypto assets is no longer under the jurisdiction of Bappebti but falls under the supervision of the Financial Services Authority.

When explaining the reason for the change in authority, Suminto Sastrosuwito, Head of Financing and Risk Management of the Ministry of Finance, said crypto assets have become investment and financial instruments. In Suminto’s explanation, crypto assets require supervision as investments and financial instruments, and Bappebti does not have this jurisdiction.
