Individual Bondholders’ Forum has legitimate concerns – Finance Minister

Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta said members of the Individual Bondholders Forum have legitimate concerns against the involvement of individual bondholders in the Debt Exchange.

He told reporters in Accra after a meeting with members who met with bondholders under the umbrella of the Ghana Individual Bondholders Forum (IBF) on Wednesday, January 18 that “they are expressing concerns that are legitimate concerns for all Ghanaians.”

He further announced that a joint technical committee has been formed by the Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, to look into concerns raised by individual bondholders ahead of the launch of the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme.

The Forum called for the Minister to be removed from the Programme, which is scheduled to be launched after Tuesday, January 31.

They claim that they have not engaged the government enough to try to include these bonds in the Program.

He accused the government of changing the timing especially since the Program came at a time when it promised not to cut the investment.

Interacting with journalists after a meeting with individual bondholders, Finance Minister Ofori-Atta indicated that the Program is not mandatory and remains voluntary.

He therefore called on bondholders to subscribe to the Program to assist the government in its efforts to overcome economic challenges.

“I think the obvious one for all of us is the voluntary program,” he said.

“We have hoped to reach 80 percent which will remain a parameter, so we ask everyone to participate and maybe something can be done and so I believe the technical committee will do it.”

The committee is expected to start sitting from Thursday, January 19.
