India won by six wickets in the three-day second Test to retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy with a 2-0 lead in the four-match series on Sunday.
Ravindra Jadeja led Australia’s batting demolition as he claimed a career-best 7-42.
Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin (3-59) bowled out Australia for 113 in the second innings at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.
Chasing 115 for victory, India’s top order faltered but a low target meant that victory, which came in the second session in three days, was never in doubt.
Skipper Rohit Sharma made 31 and Cheteshwar Pujara, who made 31 not out, scored the win in his 100th Test.
“It was a good Test match,” Pujara said after guiding India to 118-4. “It’s a special feeling to reach the final boundary. We still want to win the next two test matches.”
India, who had also won over three days in the opening test in Nagpur, are now on the verge of qualifying for the final of the World Test Championship in June.
Jadeja was adjudged Player of the Match for taking 10 wickets in the Test.
“A very good result for us,” said Rohit. “See how it went yesterday. How we came back and got the job done was a good effort, especially from the bowlers.”
Earlier, continuing on a promising 61-1, Australia added 52 runs before Jadeja and Ashwin engineered a spectacular collapse.
Asked to open in David Warner’s troubled spot, Travis Head drove Ashwin’s third ball for a boundary to signal his attacking intent.
The off-spinner, however, retaliated with three balls when he pulled Head (43) forward to create an edge which was collected by Srikar Bharat behind the stumps.
After Jadeja sent back Marnus Labuschagne (35), the wheels came off Australia’s innings with nine of the 11 batsmen posting single-digit scores.
On a pitch where spinners rule the roost, some Australian batsmen fluffed sweep shots that were either bowled or lbw.
“I thought 260 was a good score on the first day’s wicket [but India] batted well,” Australian captain Pat Cummins said, referring to his first innings of 263.
“I think that was a disappointment, because it was ahead of the game. Those opportunities don’t come often in India, so you have to grab them.
“So unfortunately we missed this one, yeah, this one hurt a bit.”
“So the review over the next few days will be what we can do differently.”
The third Test in Indore will begin on March 1.
