Increased digital connectivity for all a ‘basic necessity’ to boost economy

Internet access is no longer a luxury, but has become a basic necessity for the average individual on the African continent for economic and human development.

Whether it’s to secure a project, funding or multiple communication platforms, a strong internet connection and tools to access what you need.

The world is also increasing its reliance on digital engagement, so more and more communities are digitally connected in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Despite this, approximately only one in three people from developing countries have access to the internet according to the World Bank.

Increase connectivity

The School of Information and Technology Digital Management College of Southern Africa (Mancosa) said the country seems to be on track with efforts to increase connectivity among the people.

“Recognizing the urgent need to bridge the digital divide in South Africa, the government has set ambitious targets to achieve broad internet access for all South Africans in the coming years.

“However, at the current level of progress, it seems that the efforts of the public sector alone will not succeed in bridging the digital divide,” said Paresh Soni, Director of Mancosa’s School of Innovation and Digital Technology (SIDT).

Soni thinks that the private sector should be involved in this. “Not only will it benefit South Africans, but it will increase entrepreneurship in the country which will diversify the economy,” he said.

Digitization technology is not cheap

“For entrepreneurs working in the formal economy, digitalization is both a threat and an opportunity. We must remember that digitalization technology is not cheap.

“Most of our technology is imported and subject to the strength of our currency. In this regard, digitization will be a threat to entrepreneurs who do not have the resources to digitize and participate in the digital economy.

“For entrepreneurs who can access the right technology to digitize their business, there are certainly many opportunities. From lower economies of scale and easier access to a wider target market, to product innovation and greater efficiency, the positive role of digitization cannot be ignored,” said Soni.

Soni believes that a meaningful digital transformation will give South African entrepreneurs the opportunity to be pioneers in the global digital economy.

For this to happen, he explains that certain digital skills like digital marketing need to be taught.

He added that, as an entrepreneur in South Africa, digital skills should not be viewed through the lens of the past (in only IT Fundis having digital skills).

Today, entrepreneurs in many industries and sectors are expected to have a fair level of digital expertise in order to reap the benefits of technology for their business.
