At the bustling Yaba Market in Lagos, Nigeria, there is something for everyone.

Chatter rises from the merchants, whose stalls sprawl over miles of cracked gray concrete and packed earth. They might sell baskets of fresh fruit, wheelbarrows filled with phone cases, piles of beaded fabrics or racks of used clothes.

If you’re lucky, you might find that vintage jacket you’ve been looking for, or those long-lasting Levi’s jeans. But you won’t be as lucky as Dencity: the coolest kids in Lagos. These skaters, often wearing a uniform of baggy pants and crop tops, go to the market to thrift every week. They are armed with knowledge of fashion only young, fun and determined to have and find out the best streetwear that you can find.

Founded by Blessing Ewona, 26 years old in 2020 in response to the lack of space for queer young people and female skaters in Nigeria, Dencity skates, dreams and thrifts together. From a trip to the market to meet regular skaters at the dilapidated National Stadium or Tarkwa Bay beach, they have traced their own city map.

“I tried to find one,” he said, pointing to the group he felt at home, “then I said, let’s make it our own. Not just for me, but for others like me who also want a community like this but don’t know how. “
