At the end of the Wednesday sitting which saw the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo presenting the State of the Nation Address, the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin tickled the House with humorous comments when he assured women of his unflinching support.
The brief statement to mark International Women’s Day came amid an apparent deadlock over whether the sitting should be adjourned until Thursday as responses from the House on two occasions appeared to show no clear differences for or against the motion. .
Both sides of the House – the Majority and the Minority – screamed above the voice that heard either the vote against or for the adjournment motion when this question was put out.
Sitting comfortably in the chair, the Speaker regularly recognized all women for their great contribution to humanity.
“Today is International Women’s Day. I want to take this opportunity to congratulate all our beautiful ladies here and all the ladies in the world for partnering with people to get us away. I want to assure all women, that I am here for you,” he said Bagbin’s last part of the statement caused uncontrollable laughter and cheers from the house.
Following the incident, the House of Representatives agreed to adjourn the session on Thursday for a full discussion of the president’s presentation.
About SONA
The State of the Nations Address is in accordance with Article 67 of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, which states that the President shall deliver a message on SONA to Parliament at the beginning of each session and before the dissolution of Parliament.
SONA is a constitutional obligation and an annual tradition where the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ghana reports on the state of the country, announces the government’s agenda for the coming year and proposes to Parliament certain legislative measures.
Article 67 of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana requires Members of Parliament (MP), the Speaker of Parliament, and the Judiciary to accept the President’s SONA.
