The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Usman Baba, has ordered the arrest and prosecution of those who sell or misuse naira currency.
This was contained in a statement issued by the police spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, on Friday.
Mr. Baba ordered the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) and the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of the Force Intelligence Bureau to put officers across the country on alert to carry out the directive. in the sale or misuse of Naira notes.

According to a Friday statement by the police spokesman, Mr. Baba’s directive was to further the federal government’s policy and uphold the provisions of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007.
“The IGP also charged all Assistant Superintendents of Police and Commissioners of Police in charge of Police Commands and Formations to carry out full enforcement of sections 20 and 21 of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007 which criminalises among others hawking, selling or otherwise trading, spraying, dancing or matching in Naira notes, falsifying or counterfeiting of bank notes, refusing to accept Naira as means of payment, tampering with coins or notes issued by the CBN,” the statement read.

“The Inspector General of Police reiterates the mandate of the Nigeria Police Force to enforce all laws and regulations without prejudice to the actions of other security agencies and appeals to all to cooperate with the Nigeria Police Force as it brings a long arm.
