Ignore fraudulent messages on telecom networks shut down, NCC urges consumers

Nigerian Communications CommissionThe NCC, the regulatory authority for the telecommunications industry in Nigeria has removed insinuations on several social media platforms about its alleged plan to shut down all telecommunications networks from Thursday, February 23, 2023.

A statement by Mr. Reuben Muoka, Director, Public Affairs NCC urged all telecom customers to “disregard false and misleading information”. The statement read in full:

“The attention of the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, has been drawn to false and misleading information circulating on several social media platforms, which alleges plans to shut down all telecommunications networks and relevant ICT units, including banks’ online transfer facilities, with effect from today , February 23, 2023.

“The Nigerian public, consumers of telecommunications services, and all bank customers are advised to ignore these messages or similar ones that insinuate deliberate network shutdowns or service disruptions on the Nigerian telecommunications network.

“This malicious and subversive message originates and is spread by fraudsters and unscrupulous elements in society with the aim of causing chaos and panic among the people.

“The Commission has received firm guarantees from all service providers to the effect that all network services are now in optimal performance, and will not witness any intentional shutdown or disruption, especially in the very important period of the general election in the country.

“Therefore, all users of telecommunication and banking services utilizing the network facilities are assured of continued optimal service delivery before, during, and after the general elections in Nigeria,” the statement concluded.
