The International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday, indicting him War crimes over the invasion of Ukraine.
Putin and Maria Lvova-Belova, Russia’s commissioner for children’s rights, are both wanted by the ICC for illegally deporting and transporting Ukrainian children to Russia.
The arrest warrant is the first international charge filed since Russia invades Ukraine in February 2022 and the first to oppose a head of state with a permanent seat on the UN Security Council.
“This is an important moment in the justice process,” said ICC president, Judge Piotr Hofmanski video statement.
HofmaÅ„ski noted that, according to the procedure, the court’s prosecutor has presented the case against the couple to a panel of pretrial judges, who concluded that there were “credible charges” against them.
The ICC does not recognize diplomatic immunity for leaders accused of war crimes, crimes against humanity, or genocide.
Russia is not a party to the Rome Statute, the treaty that led to the ICC, and is unlikely to hand over Putin or Lvova-Belova for prosecution.
“The International Criminal Court has issued an arrest warrant for Vladimir Putin,” Dmitry Medvedev, former Russian president and current deputy chairman of the Russian Security Council, wrote in Twitter. “There is no need to explain where this paper should be used🧻.”
But the fee, which does not expire, will make the couple an international pariah.
At 123 countries which has ratified the Rome Statute namely urged to arrest any suspect in their area.
“The ICC is doing its job. As a court of law, judges issue arrest warrants. The execution depends on international cooperation,” HofmaÅ„ski said.
