A new Commissioner of Police (CP), Idowu Owohunwa, has been sworn in in Lagos State.
The swearing-in ceremony was held at the police headquarters in Ikeja on Tuesday.
At the ceremony, Mr. Owohunwa told the personnel that “our bond with Lagosians is to keep them safe and secure. Lagosians want this done in the context of rule of law, professionalism and respect for basic human rights.
He said he was ready to implement the mandate with utmost commitment and dedication.
“I pledge to work hard to provide the necessary leadership to the Lagos State Police Command in a manner that will prioritize discipline, training and capacity development, professionalism, and public accountability in a manner that will leave the government and citizens of Lagos without any doubt. new to policing them in hope,” he said.
“I promise that under my watch, I will fight the deviants in the state police command who are constantly tarnishing their reputation and working against the citizens they are paid to serve and protect.
“Such elements are encouraged to uphold the principle of self-discipline in the public good or be prepared for the consequences. An undisciplined officer is a threat not only to the police family but also to the community and the State they serve.
The new police chief also called for better operational efficiency and strong inter-agency synergy with military detachments and other state and federal law enforcement and public safety agencies in the country.

He said that by increasing or creating new strategic partnerships with relevant sister security agencies, in addition to public trust, his leadership will witness unprecedented giant steps.
“Above all, with your support and trust from Lagosians, I intend to use a problem-solving framework that will be founded on the principles of zero-tolerance policing for crime, crime mapping practices, and the use of crime statistics and intelligence analysis tools to support the police perspective,” he said. .
The new CP also congratulated his colleague, Abiodun Alabi, who has been promoted to the position of assistant inspector general of police in the state.
“At this juncture, I once again salute my boss and predecessor, Ag. AIG Abiodun Alabi, for his service to the command and the people of Lagos state,” Mr. Owohunwa said.

“You may be out of state command, but the good news is that you are still in our service, even in a higher professional field. We will knock on your door for professional guidance. I am sure you will always let us in.

Speaking about the general election, he said he was briefed by Mr. Alabi “in detail on the strategy and action plan for the exercise.”
In his valedictory speech, Mr. Alabi, praised all the sister agencies in the country for their support in the success of his administration.

“In the first press conference on January 24, 2022, I explained that the strategy of crime prevention and the vision of policing will depend on visibility policing, respect for human rights, professional ethics, intelligence-led policing, community policing, proactive policing and inter-agency synergy,” he said.
“You all agree with me that we have made a remarkable achievement on this scale. Accountability is the foundation of my administration because all Regional Commanders, DPOs and other officials are held accountable for their actions and inactions.
“We are saddened to note two cases of misuse of firearms, but in the usual tradition of ensuring justice and accountability, the officers involved in these cases are now on trial for their actions.”
