Hull City 2 – 0 W Brom

Benjamin Tetteh scored his first goal for Hull as they beat West Brom 2-0 on Friday, with the Baggies missing out on the Sky Bet Championship play-offs.

Carlos Corberan’s side have now lost their last five matches in all competitions and beat their opponents in the first 25 minutes.

But the injury stoppage allowed Liam Rosenior to reorganize the team, and pay-off almost immediately when Tetteh rifled home in the corner to see Hull ahead against the run of the game in the 33rd minute. It was the Tigers’ only shot on target in the first half.

Discussing the changes in the middle of the half, Rosenior told Sky Sports: “I changed the personnel a bit. We went with a 4-3-3 press. We went too deep, we couldn’t trigger properly and we went back to a normal press that the players know.

“That’s in me. We work in the day and not enough to get out, but at the end of the day, it’s up to the players to take that information and they do it fantastically well.”

West Brom’s evening got worse in the second half as Dara O’Shea was credited with an own goal in the 57th minute. Sean McLoughlin’s header from a corner hit the Baggies captain on the way through.

Hull also had goalkeeper Karl Darlow to thank for their victory. He made a number of crucial saves, impressing on his home debut after signing on loan from Newcastle in the January transfer window.

West Brom remain in 11th place with 48 points, six off the play-off places ahead of the remaining games this weekend. Hull moved up three places to 13th, now just three points behind the Baggies.

How Hull saw from West Brom

It was the first half of two rounds. West Brom started superbly and Hull were kept in the game by three excellent Darlow saves. In 10 minutes, Jed Wallace sent in a cross from the right, which ricocheted off Alfie Jones. It landed for Marc Albrighton, who chipped goalwards, but Darlow made a leaping save with Daryl Dike going in at the back post.

Not long after, the goalkeeper made two saves in quick succession. Conor Townsend’s pass into space was collected by Wallace, but Darlow got down to stop it. Then, Albrighton picked out Dike with a superb deep pass, but the striker’s header went straight to the keeper. The follow-up shot is also wide.

But it was a 22nd-minute injury time for Hull’s Regan Slater that allowed the hosts to regroup. Rosenior summoned the entire squad and, paper in hand, reorganized the team – and it worked well.

Eleven minutes later and Hull took the lead. Tetteh nodded the ball down to run away from Slater, who was ahead of Okay Yokuslu, before rolling the ball back to his teammates. Tetteh then swept the ball past Josh Griffiths into the far corner.

Hull continued to dominate for the rest of the half, but it was West Brom who forced another save from Darlow minutes after the restart. Albrighton’s pass found Jayson Molumby in the area. His cutback found Dike, but the attacker’s effort was parried back by Darlow.

After Tetteh forced a stop from Griffiths, Hull added their second from a corner. A brilliant delivery, which McLoughlin nodded towards goal. The ball took a nick from O’Shea on the way before beating his own keeper to double the home team’s lead.

West Brom’s fortunes may have turned for the better in the 64th minute as they won a free kick. John Swift went straight with the delivery, but could only ping from the upright before taking the follow-up as well as the corner.

The Baggies continued to try for goals, but they were guilty of sloppy play and poor finishing as Hull cruised to victory at the MKM Stadium.

Man of the match – Karl Darlow | ‘I’ve been itching to play’

Andy Hinchcliffe from Sky Sports on co-commentary: “It’s a team effort in terms of Hull winning the game, but Karl Darlow has made save after save. It’s been the story of the game from West Brom’s perspective – they’ve created chances but every time, it’s either a poor finish. or Karl Darlow’s position and reaction .

Darlow told Sky Sports after the game: “It couldn’t have been better. As a team we did well in a very difficult game. They are a good team, it was a back-to-the-wall job for the most part, but we held firm and got two goals with little quality.

“I’ve been itching to play – that’s why I came here. I want to get back into the rhythm again at the end of the season. I came last month and the boy has been amazing. The attitude to work and the way he works every day is very good. We deserve the day this.”

Rosenior: I couldn’t be prouder

Hull manager Liam Rosenior to Sky Sports: “It feels good after the longest 20 minutes of my managerial career.

“At that time, West Brom showed a good team and we had to be well organized and disciplined. Benji scored a good goal and Karl Darlow made a good save, so we bought him to the club, he is a top goalkeeper.

“It’s a good finish and I’m sure he’ll get a few more… He hasn’t been out for a long time but he’ll get fitter and stronger.”

Pundits praised Rosenior’s change for Hull to win

Robert Earnshaw on Sky Sports: “The biggest difference was the small moments when Liam Rosenior went and changed what happened tactically. He saw something different.

“But also the work rate and Darlow in goal was excellent. He made the saves he had to make and it was a good performance from Hull.”

Hal Robson-Kanu on Sky Sports: “You have to come into a game like this and take the three points at home. West Brom just couldn’t do that.

“That’s been the story for West Brom lately, not capitalizing when they’re playing well.

“But credit to Hull, they showed incredible resilience. Liam Rosenior showed real tactical nous and it was a fantastic result for Hull.”

Corberan: The results do not show the full picture of the game

West Brom manager Carlos Corberan to Sky Sports: “I don’t think the results show what happened in the full picture of the game. The accuracy rate against us is high from them and our accuracy rate is low.

“If I can tell you the picture of the game, he found one level of accuracy that you can’t find in 90 minutes.

“Every time you don’t add three points, you lose the chance to add to the table. We want to be there and get the top spot in the table. Today, we couldn’t get the result we wanted. .
