Liberian police say they have seized large quantities of weapons and ammunition at the country’s main port and at private homes outside the capital, Monrovia.
The weapons found at the port of Monrovia were in boxes stacked in a ship’s container, Inspector General of Police Patrick Sudue told reporters on Thursday.
“[In] the first few boxes we searched we found some heavy weapons,” he said.
“We are talking about military weapons in the box.”
The cache included an Omega 15 assault rifle, a Rock River LAR rifle, and a double-barreled automatic machine gun on display for reporters.
He said some of the ammunition found did not match the weapon – and suggested the gun was still hidden or could be on the road.
Preliminary investigations have named a Liberian citizen living in the US as the consignor.
A search of the suspect’s home on the outskirts of Monrovia found a shipment of weapons hidden in the ceiling, the police boss said.
He said the Liberian government is considering asking the US to extradite the suspect.
The motive for the shipment remains unclear in a country still reeling from the effects of a civil war that killed an estimated 250,000 people and ended in 2003.
General elections in Liberia will be held on October 10.
