How we can save Nigeria, By Femi Falade

Flag of Nigeria

My plea to us, good Nigerians, is to see good results in this election. It is natural that the losers will suffer, but there is a sense of leadership and selflessness at this time for the winners to reach out to others for the unity of Nigeria. Any action that could harm the country at this time should be avoided. All rampaging thugs causing trouble must be checked so that Nigeria remains one.

I am worried about the future of this entity, Nigeria. The narrative and reactions to the just concluded presidential election and its aftermath have confirmed that we as Nigerians are far from united.

The results of the election have transformed most of us to tribal bigots. This is a phenomenon that can lead to the death of our country and take away the peace we long for as a nation.

I want to appeal to our sensibilities. It is not only Igbos who voted for Peter Obi in Lagos. No one voted for him elsewhere, especially in the north, especially the Christians. All three main contenders in this election were the beneficiaries of votes from ethnic, religious and geographical delineations. Yoruba, Hausa and Igbo, Christians and Muslims, youths and old people are among those who voted for Peter Obi in the state where he won. Likewise for Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu in every state he won. No contender can claim full tribal or religious vote stock in any part of Nigeria.

If we continue the way we are accused, along tribal and religious lines, there may not be a Nigeria that can be ruled by any political party.
