I spent about 30 minutes using a single app to cancel a bunch of subscriptions that I no longer use. I will save about $1,235 this year.
If you’re like me, you might sign up for a bunch of subscriptions using different credit cards and then forget to cancel them when you stop using them.
I use the Rocket Money app to view all my subscriptions. It allows me to cancel what I don’t need without opening many other apps or websites and then thinking about how to cancel the subscription.
I canceled Hello Fresh’s meal-prep subscription service, saving me $980 for the year right off the bat. I also nixed my subscription to a $180 workout app and cut my $75 Instacart membership. Rocket Money can also help you find and cancel subscriptions to streaming services you no longer use or other recurring bills you’ve forgotten about for a long time.
The app offers a 7-day free trial for new users, enough time for you to unsubscribe, but it costs $3 to $12 a month, billed annually, depending on what you need. There are other features of Rocket Money, such as budget tracking and savings tools that can generate monthly fees for you. I just need to collect all my subscriptions in one place so I can cancel the ones I’m not using anymore.
This is what I did.
How to find and cancel unwanted subscriptions
It’s easy to create an account and navigate Rocket Money as long as you remember the passwords to most of your accounts. Here’s what to do:
- Register for a Rocket Money account online. You can also download the app for iPhone or Android.
- Link your checking account, savings account and credit card. Sometimes this requires two-factor authentication, which means you’ll receive an email or text with a code to help you log into your bank or credit card account so you can connect to Rocket Money.
- You will see the latest transactions once your account is linked. Recurring charges appear as small icons that look like arrows around the perimeter of a circle on the website. In the app, you’ll see a tab for recurring charges at the bottom of the screen.
- Click the subscription you want to cancel.
- Once you see your subscription transaction, tap the drop down menu button in the top right corner of the website. If you’re using the Rockey Money app, tap the three-dot icon next to the charge.
- Select “Cancel This For Me.”
- Enter your username and password and give Rocket Money permission to access your account.
- Repeat to cancel another subscription.
- Rocket Money said it could not cancel one of my subscriptions but provided the necessary information to cancel the service, including a website cancellation link, a customer service phone number and a support email address for the company.
Pro Tip: If you’re having trouble remembering all of your accounts, visit annualcreditreport.com to get your free credit report, which will include all of your open accounts. Each year, you can download a free copy of your annual credit report, without lowering your credit score. This will allow you to see some random credit accounts you have opened and forgotten about if you want to connect them to Rocket Money.
