
While there are fears that Covid will affect the results of the matric class of 2022, the Horizon Education Trust school immediately switched to online learning has paid with a 100% pass rate, with 308 passing Bachelors and 740 distinctions.
According to the Trust’s director of education Zafer Soyertas, the non-profit organization, which has eight educational institutions in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, Pretoria and Port Elizabeth, has for the past 17 years achieved a 100% matric pass rate.
“The Horizon Educational Trust celebrates another year of excellent matric results, which has been a tradition for the past 17 years,” said Soyertas.
Formula for success
Asked how Horizon’s matriculation candidates achieved excellence in the midst of Covid, which made it difficult for some to matriculate, Soyertas said: “There is good collaboration and coordination between parents, teachers and students. Since the outbreak of Covid, our school has switched to online education, which leads to smooth learning, without interruptions or gaps in teaching and learning.

To bridge the gap between rich and poor parents, Horizon has offered scholarships to deserving children from disadvantaged backgrounds in traditionally black towns and rural areas.
“Almost all of them have now been offered scholarships to study at universities like Wits and Cape Town,” Soyertas said.
Top achievers
Among the winners of the highest matric class in 2022, Mahdi Da Costa, received 10 awards.
“To achieve this result, it was not within the scope of my expectations. However, to achieve this result, I can only thank all the help and influence that I have had during my journey at Star College. The atmosphere of the school is peaceful and respectful – combined with efforts staff and students – is often an overlooked aspect of the journey. Studying in a school where you can feel relaxed and comfortable learning is truly a privilege and honor. The endless effort of the teachers to go beyond what they want to help us is incredible, “said Da Costa.

Said M Tanweer Alli, who scored eight distinctions to achieve matric: “My time at Star College Bridgetown has been wonderful. All the teachers do their part, with maximum dedication and are always supportive. The relationship that has been developed with the school over the years, makes the institution it becomes a second home, with each member of the staff becoming more like a family. They definitely push you to the limit and encourage you to reach for the stars – Hence the name Star College, which makes the journey to success, one special. I have achieved the results I wanted and am happy very.
The principal was proud
The principal of Star College Pretoria Murat Kalayci, described the achievements of the school’s matriculants as “the culmination of the efforts of students, dedicated staff and the support of parents. The top three students – Phakamile Ncokazi got seven A’ predicates, Ba’dir Ssemanda also got seven As and Oratile Magoro scored six,” said a proud Kalayci.
Star College Bridgetown principal Ugur Hulusi Patli said: “Each year, Bridgetown has proven that hard work and dedication bring extraordinary results. Since 2003, we have achieved a 100% graduation rate. The academic year 2022 will be no different, with students grade 12 achieved a 100% pass rate and a 91.67% undergraduate pass rate. An aggregate average of 3.25 A was achieved. The top winner Mahdi Da Costa, got 10 As, with a 100% pass rate in Mathematics. This is an outstanding achievement by the matriculates, is the culmination of the efforts of our students, a team of dedicated teachers and supportive parents, who guide our sons through their school years.

humble beginnings
Founded in 1998 by a group of Turkish philanthropists in South Africa, Horizon opened its first school in 1999 – with just 20 students.
Twenty-four years later, the trust has educated more than 4,500 students in various institutions across the country.
Striving to achieve excellence in Mathematics, Physical Science and Computer education, the trust has consistently produced high results, driven by high quality teaching standards, with matriculation accepted by the university for further studies in the fields of Medicine, engineering, IT, science actuarial and accounting.
