Ghana’s Herbert Mensah received a rousing welcome at Kotoka International airport on his return from South Africa where he was elected President of Rugby Africa for the next four years.
Herbert Mensah got 30 votes out of 32 votes to take over continental Rugby’s governing body. Uganda’s main opponent, Andrew Owuo received only 1 vote and there was one spoiled ballot.
On his arrival at the airport on Tuesday, March 21, 2023, he was met with a rich traditional Ghanaian Adowa dance and many members of the Ghana Supporters Union who celebrated his achievement with a brass band.
Also at the airport to welcome Herbert Mensah and celebrate his lifetime achievement were several Ghanaian Rugby players and Presidents of other sports federations in Ghana.
Among them are Mr. Bawah Fuseini the President of the Triathlon Association of Ghana, Mr. Evans Yeboah the President of Badminton Ghana, Mr. Mohammed Shaban the Secretary General of the Ghana Cycling Federation, and Mr. Jojo Empheson who represents Ghana’s Amateur Boxing.
Ahead of his election to the top continental post, the renowned sports administrator and former chairman of Asante Kotoko received official approval from the President of the Republic of Ghana Nana Akufo Addo through the Ministry of Youth and Sports as well as the National Sports Authority.
This follows official nominations from Nigeria and Botswana.
Herbert Mensah Mensah will be the first Anglophone President to run Rugby Africa since the establishment of the continental body.
