Hearts of Oak remembers May 9 tragedy on 25th anniversary

Accra Hearts of Oak have paid emotional tribute to the 127 supporters who lost their lives on May 9, 2001, after a league game against Asante Kotoko ended in Africa’s biggest stadium disaster.

The tragedy, which remains the deadliest in Ghana’s sporting history, continues to serve as a stark reminder of the need for tolerance, restraint, and safety at football venues across the country.

Marking the 25th anniversary, Hearts shared a powerful message on their social media platforms: “Never Again. A tragedy that changed Ghana football forever. As we remember the 127 fans we lost, we renew the pledge: Never Again. Forever in our hearts.”

The Accra-based club have lined up a series of commemorative activities to honour the memory of the departed, and are expected to observe a minute’s silence before their Ghana Premier League clash with Aduana Stars on Sunday.

May 9 will always be a solemn day dedicated to reflection, unity, and a renewed call for zero tolerance to stadium violence.
