But after another 18 months, Spurs find themselves in a familiar situation. Still, they have yet to win a trophy and finishing in the top four again looks like an uphill battle with head coach Antonio Conte’s future far from certain.

To compound matters for the north London club, Manchester United are in the market for a striker this summer and have long admired Kane, adding fuel to speculation about his future.

This is a crucial time for Tottenham Kane’s future. He will have one more year left on his contract this summer and, without signing an agreement, will leave the decision to Daniel Levy. Cash or risk losing the England captain for free in 2024.

Kane loves Tottenham and he will certainly listen when talks about his planned contract at the end of the year are over, but he also wants to win trophies. The turmoil when Manchester City arrived was due to a lack of ambition at the club and when Antonio Conte arrived, Spurs believed this would help to resolve it.

Soon Kane was not alone as Conte vocally advocated the need to improve his squad. After Norwich’s game on the last day of last season, when they qualified for the Champions League, captain Hugo Lloris also weighed in, telling. Sky Sports News The club must show ambition to build on progress.

Suddenly, he was urged to act from many quarters, including the fanbase, and was part of Levy finding a cash injection to help the team sign the likes of Richarlison.

Champions League football awaits, but a top-four bid is faltering as rivals Arsenal move forward in the title race. However, Spurs are just three points short of their tally at this stage last season.

There is uncertainty over Conte’s future and no movement yet on Kane’s contract situation, but for now, he is committed to scoring goals and continuing to help the team.

A lot can happen in six months and if more investments are found, it can be interesting. Either way, it’s sure to be an eventful few months for one of Europe’s deadliest strikers.

Spurs will certainly want to keep the record goalscorer coming, but they will need to convince him to sign a new deal when talks resume.

Levy was in a strong position when Manchester City came calling, but from a business perspective, the power shifted to Kane with each transfer window.

Tottenham will still insist on a big money move this summer and would certainly prefer him to move abroad if selling is a last resort. Bayern Munich and Real Madrid have shown interest.

Harry Kane has long been of interest to Manchester United and the striker is a priority position for the club to address this summer. His contract situation at Spurs – he will only have one year left at the end of the season – combined with his goalscoring record means he is an avenue worth exploring.

If you look at United’s transfer business, you’ll see a double-edged policy of bringing in pedigree and experienced players – think Raphael Varane, Casmeiro, Christian Eriksen – alongside high-ceilinged young players like Antony and Jadon Sancho. They are trying to balance being competitive now and in the long run.

There are obvious reasons for Kane’s interest – not least to create attacking chemistry between him and Eriksen – but my understanding is that United want a younger and more dynamic profile as their first prize like Napoli’s Victor Osimehn.

They have seen Benjamin Sesko and Mohamed Kudus and there is also a feeling that Kane is trying to get the best contract offer on the table from Spurs.

Tottenham still want in the region of £100m for him. There is another factor: if Conte leaves this summer and Mauricio Pochettino returns, will Kane reject the reunion?

It is thought that the main priority for Manchester United this summer is to sign the number 9 and Kane is one of those options. Prior to Manchester City’s bid for Kane, United and Chelsea were two other clubs that showed strong interest.

Negotiations between United and Tottenham have historically been indirect, but if they push for Kane as their main target, the discussions are sure to be intense.

There is another thought that United could opt for a younger striker but Kane will ensure quick goals and will be driven by motivation to break Alan Shearer’s Premier League scoring record.
