Gunmen left threatening messages Thursday for Argentine soccer superstar Lionel Messi and set fire to a supermarket owned by his father-in-law in Argentina’s third-largest city, Buenos Aires, police said.
No one was injured in the early morning attack, and it is unclear why the attackers would target Messi or the Unico supermarket in Rosario, which is owned by the family of his wife, Antonella Roccuzzo.
The city’s mayor, Pablo Javkin, blamed federal authorities for what he called a failure to curb a surge in drug-related violence in Rosario, which is about 300 kilometers northwest of the capital Buenos Aires.
Police said two men on a motorcycle fired at least a dozen shots into a Unico branch during the day, and left a message on a piece of cardboard that read, “Messi, we are waiting for you. Javkin is also a drug dealer. , so we will not deal with you .”
Javkin, a centre-left politician in opposition to the ruling Peronist coalition, appears to be suspected of involvement in attacks on criminal gangs and federal security officials.
“I doubt everyone, even those who are supposed to protect us,” Javkin said in an interview with a local radio station.
He said the supermarket is in a crime-prone part of Rosario, he has raised the issue in recent meetings with federal and provincial law enforcement officials, and no action has been taken.
“Which one should take care of us?” Javkin said. “It is clear that those who have weapons and have the possibility to investigate criminals do not do it, and it is very easy for any gang to do something like this.”
