Gunmen have killed a couple going on Imo StateSouth-eastern Nigeria.
The victims, Martins Ifechukwu and Gloria Mba were killed on Tuesday in Arondizuogu, a community in Ideato North Local Government Area of the state.
The gunmen also killed Mr. Ifechukwu’s brother, who was driving his prospective spouse in a rickshaw during the attack, according to a report by Punch newspaper.
The couple will be invited to hold a wedding on January 18, according to information on the wedding invitation card seen by PREMIUM TIMES.
A resident, who asked not to be named, told Punch that they complained to the police in the country about rising cases of killing and kidnapping in the area, but only received a promise from them to solve the security situation.
“But since then, killings and kidnappings have happened every day. The Arondizuogu people did not come back for Christmas and New Year.
“People who come cannot walk by car. As we speak, there is a mass exodus from Arondizuogu this morning (Wednesday) after what happened last night,” said the resident.
He added that hoodlums usually target “flashing cars” and kill their owners if they refuse to let them go.

“We are no longer safe in Arondizuogu. Students are afraid to go to school; our mothers no longer go to the market for fear of not being known.
The spokesman for the police in the country, Michael Abattam, has confirmed the incident, the newspaper reported.
More insecure
Like other states in the south-east of Nigeria, security has deteriorated in Imo State with frequent attacks by armed men.
These attacks often target security agencies, government officials and facilities.

The Nigerian government has accused people of being banned Indigenous people of Biafra responsible for deadly attacks in the region. But the group has repeatedly denied involvement in the attack.
The separatist group is leading the agitation for an independent state in Biafra which it wants to carve out from the south-east and some parts of south-south Nigeria.
