Gunmen bomb ex-governor’s convoy in Imo, kill four police officers

Gunmen, on Monday, bombed the convoy of the former governor of Imo State, Maybe Ohakim.

The incident happened in Oriagu, a community in Ehime Mbano Local Government Area of ​​the state.

Mr. Ohakim escaped the attack, but four policemen attached to the convoy were killed by gunmen.
The hoodlums razed one of the vehicles of the convoy when they could not arrest the former governor, according to a report by the Nation.

She was said to be returning from a visit with her two children, when gunmen attacked her.

Mr. Ohakim served as the state governor between 2007 and 2011.

“His Majesty was the main target but his driver was smart enough to beat him as he tried to block him.

“Disappointed that the main target had escaped, he blocked the backup vehicle and set it on fire. The four policemen with him were set on fire,” an unnamed source close to the former governor told the Nation.

A reinforcement team from the police operation is said to have arrived from Owerri, the state capital, and escorted the former governor to his residence.

The state’s police spokesman, Michael Abattam, did not respond to calls and text messages seeking comment from him on the attack.

More insecure

Like other states in the south-east of Nigeria, security has deteriorated in Imo State with frequent attacks by armed men.

These attacks often target security agencies, government officials and facilities.

The Nigerian government has accused people of being banned Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) responsible for deadly attacks in the region. But the group has repeatedly denied involvement in the attack.
