The mother of US midfielder Gio Reyna has confirmed she reported head coach Gregg Berhalter for kicking her husband more than 30 years ago.
Berhalter will not be in charge of the US training camp in California this month amid an ongoing US Soccer investigation after he admitted to kicking his 25-year-old wife during a teenage argument.
The governing body proposed the investigation after Berhalter, who participated in the World Cup in Qatar, said that he had threatened to expose an incident involving his girlfriend Rosalind in 1991 during the tournament.
On Tuesday, Berhalter posted his own statement on social media saying that “an individual contacted US Soccer” during the 2022 World Cup saying “they had information about me that would ‘incriminate me'”.
Berhalter said that in 1991 he kicked his now-wife Rosalind outside a bar after an argument.
“There is no excuse for what I did that night; it was a shameful moment and I regret it to this day.” Berhalter wrote. “At that point, I immediately apologized to Rosalind, but understandably, she wanted nothing to do with me.”
The two reconciled after the war and have been married for 25 years with four children.

Danielle Reyna, the wife of former US captain Claudio and former roommate and soccer friend of Berhalter’s wife Rosalind, announced that she reported the incident to US Soccer on December 11.

He continued: “As part of the conversation, I told Earnie that I thought it was unfair that Gio, who apologized for his immature behavior regarding playing time, was still dragged through the mud while Gregg asked and apologized. equal.

But Danielle Reyna refused to blackmail Berhalter with information from the incident, and insisted that she did not ask him to be fired.

Commenting on the wider investigation, US Soccer said in a statement on Tuesday: “Through this process, US Soccer has learned of inappropriate behavior towards some staff members by individuals outside of our organization.
“We take these actions very seriously and have expanded our investigation to include these allegations.
“We appreciate Gregg and Rosalind coming forward to speak openly about this incident. Consistent with our commitment to transparency, we will share the results of the investigation publicly when it is completed.
“US Soccer condemns any form of violence and takes these allegations very seriously.”
Anthony Hudson, who was an assistant coach during the World Cup in Qatar, will take charge of the training camp this month.
