GRASAG rejects increase in university fees
The Students Association of Ghana (GRASAG) has rejected the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) 15% fee increase in all public universities for the 2022/23 academic year.
GTEC last week directed tertiary institutions to review fees for the next academic year with a maximum increase of 15 percent.
A statement issued by GRASAG said, “GRASAG members throughout the country have been greatly affected by the economic downturn, and the increase in university fees, we believe will exacerbate the situation”.
According to GRASAG, some tertiary institutions have temporarily waived fees above the approved 15% increase, adding that some members of the Association will drop out of school because they cannot afford the fees.
GRASAG called on the government and GTEC to engage with stakeholders including trade unions before implementing the approved fees.
“Some universities have increased fees by more than 15% approved by Parliament. GRASAG with this release asks the government and GTEC to stop the implementation of this increase indefinitely to allow further engagement with relevant stakeholders including trade unions,” said the statement.
Therefore, they threatened to oppose the university management’s efforts to impose additional fees on students without extensive stakeholder engagement.
