GRA to punish defaulting companies in VAT payments
The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) says it has decided to crack down on all companies that do not pay Value Added Tax (VAT) this year, 2023.
This follows a distressing exercise carried out during the festive season to enforce VAT compliance as part of a move to increase revenue collection for the state.
Talk to Citi NewsThe Central Enforcement Area Manager of the GRA, Joseph Annan, explained that so far, the outlet has visited 60 companies and about 28 of the total number have been assessed.
According to him, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service is currently preparing a docket to prosecute the defaulters.
“Now, the ones that have been opened, there are more than 60, but the ones that have been assessed and the payments have been made in 2017 and 2018. This is the docket that is being prepared. This year, it will be more aggressive. From September to the end of December when we started, we seeing some good improvement in our collections, every month, we are achieving our monthly targets,” said the Accra Central Enforcement Area Manager of the GRA.
Mr. Annan appealed to businessmen to pay their taxes on time to avoid legal trouble or embarrassment in the media.
“I feel ashamed that your business is mentioned in the media that you are a person who does not pay taxes. To avoid this and other complications in terms of legal issues and others, we will advise the company to do the right thing,” he urged.
