Government slams John Mahama on TEN, Sankofa claims inactive
The Ministry of Energy has taken a swipe at former president John Dramani Mahama for accusing the New Patriotic Party and president Nana Akufo-Addo of greed which he says has led to the redundancy of TEN and Sankofa Gye Nyame Fields.
In response to the accusations of the former president, the Public Affairs Unit of the Ministry in a 17-point press statement said it is not true that the Mahama administration produced substantial oil from the two oil fields that have now been opened down by the Akufo-Addo administration.
The ministry said the success and the subsequent oil fields and lifting that Mahama has done, were all initiated by former president John Agyekum Kufuor and the NPP.
“Ghana’s second producing oil field, TEN Fields, emerged between 2009 and 2012, following the discoveries of Tweneboa, Enyenra and Ntomme. The Tano Petroleum Deep Water Agreement that created TEN Discoveries was signed in 2006 when Mr JA Kufuor was President. evaluation, then there was the development of the field which culminated in the first oil in 2016. For the information of John Mahama and his followers, cumulatively, it took five (5) years from discovery to production for TEN Fields to start producing oil. for Ghana.
“Regarding the Sankofa-Gye Nyame Field, the Cape Three Points Offshore Petroleum Agreement was signed in 2006 under the presidency of Mr. JA Kufuor. The Gye Nyame discovery was made in 2009 while the Sankofa East discovery was made in 2012, the first oil from Sankofa Gye Nyame Filed was poured on May 20, 2017. It took five (5) years for the Sankofa East discovery to reach the first oil. after the discovery.”
Former president Mahama tweeted that the NDC “bequeathed to the Akufo-Addo government two new oil fields, TEN and Sankofa. Greed and ineptitude as against the national interest means the fact that there is no additional production activity in the upstream oil sector in the last 7 years.
The Ministry of Energy denied the allegations and said “under Mahama’s presidency, at least 11 Oil Agreements were signed before he left office. Out of these 11, none of them have produced oil so far. This is an irreparable record of shame for John Mahama and his followers in the situation Indeed, in an effort to revive petroleum activities, the Ministry of Energy has terminated four of the John Mahama-era Petroleum Agreements and made them available to prospective investors.
