Speaking in an interview in Accra, Mr. Domelevo said the Attorney General’s Department should prosecute those behind the violations in the report.
According to him, the norm where the violation is only reported in the Audit report with no consequences for the perpetrators should be changed immediately.
“Well, I think many things can happen, and I expect them to happen. First of all, I expect the Auditor-General to comply with Article 187 clause 7(B) which requires him that whenever he finds expenditure that is contrary to the law, he should not allow and pay extra.So I expect the Auditor General to do it.
“Two, report to Parliament. And I hope that Parliament should not delay the report, that they should refer it quickly to the Public Accounts Committee, and that the Public Accounts Committee should call the various institutions that are audited for the books to make sure that the right thing is done.
“I also think that problems bordering on criminality the Auditor General should be in touch with the Special Prosecutor’s Office so that we can immediately take them. It beats my mind in a country where when we meet petty thieves, people who steal bananas, steal sheep, etc. other, we punish them for many years and if we meet public officials who steal our money all as a result of our system. can’t work, hospitals can’t work, schools are not good, roads are not good, all that carried out only reported in the Audit report, at best, collect money and free.
“So I think there should be consequences and the Attorney General may want to come in here to prosecute some of these people if his office has room to do this,” he said.
The Auditor General’s report revealed several violations in government spending for Covid-19 from March 2020 to June 2022.
Some of the infractions that were discovered include; paid a total of US$607,419.02 out of US$4,049,460.12 for the purchase of 26 ambulances that were never delivered, paid GH₵151,500 that was not approved by the Ministry of Information to its own staff as Covid insurance, and paid for vaccines worth $80 million by the government that were never delivered, among others.
