New street names can be tricky.

They should be easy to say, non-offensive and – most importantly – novel.

“They can’t sound like other street names or they’re obsolete,” said Andrea Miller, manager of construction administration for Harmony Homes in Nevada.

That’s why when it comes to naming streets in a new Henderson, Nev., housing development, they turn to a beloved video game series.

“I’d come home from work and names would bounce off my kids, and they’d come up with ridiculous street names and then we’d have to get rid of them,” Miller said. As it happens guest host Helen Mann.

“So the oldest was like, ‘What’s Pokemon?'”

Now, in the suburbs of Las Vegas, a new townhouse on Jigglypuff Place or just off Snorlax Lane can be yours.

Choosing a street name can be a long process. Dozens of options will be submitted by developers to city officials, but only a few will be approved.

When Harmony Homes started construction on the development, the mobile game Pokemon Go popular with his sons, 11 and 14.

The trio sat down to name some of the most popular Pokemon – originally known in Japan as “Pocket Monsters” – in the game. But there was one Miller did not use, because he felt it was a bit too obvious.

“I don’t want to use Pikachu because I don’t want it to be real that the community is named after Pokemon,” he said. As it happens.

In addition to Jigglypuff and Snorlax, residents and visitors to the area can find streets named after Charmander and Charizard like lizards, and Squirtle the turtle monster.

This isn’t the first time Miller has proposed an unconventional name based on a popular series. Another development in North Las Vegas has streets named after TV shows paw patrol, including Rubble Avenue, also inspired by his children.

“The kids that live in the neighborhood, they love the street names,” Miller said.

‘It makes me laugh’

Miller believes the street name will resonate not only with the kids who live on the street, but first-time home buyers who may have grown up with the game and the series, which debuted in the late 90s.

He hopes the company behind the franchise won’t take issue with the street name. “I hope they find it as amazing as the city,” he said.

CBC Radio reached out to The Pokemon Company for comment, but did not hear back before publication.

After all, he says living at a unique address like Squirtle Lane will put a smile on the homeowner’s face.

“Every time I hear ‘Jigglypuff,’ it makes me giggle a little,” she said.

“So I hope it will do the same for buyers.”
