
During the speech, Biden said that “some Republicans” have plans to “sunset” all federal laws every five years so that Congress would have to repeatedly authorize funding for everything – including Social Security and Medicare.
He then jumped into a very long thread to downplay what he was proposing, mainly because it was unpopular with his fellow Republicans.
Scott claims the plan is just to make aThe federal law will expire, or become extinct if not re-approved, in five years and added, incidentally, “If there is a law to be passed, Congress can re-enact it.”
The senator said the plan “aims to address ALL the crazy new laws our Congress has been passing lately” and claims “to suggest that this means I want to cut Social Security or Medicare is a lie, and a dishonest move…from a very confused President.
Despite his tweeting denials, Scott has advocated cutting Social Security and Medicare in the past, as this exchange from May with Fox News anchor John Roberts demonstrates.
Scott won praise for his Twitter thread, but it was from those who admired him that he spoke loudly about Republican plans to destroy the safety net.
